1. Can You Join If You Cannot Swim at All?
Yes, absolutely. Over 60% of guests on the Ayung River cannot swim or have never been on moving river water before.
Every single guest is fitted with an international standard, US Coast Guard / CE-approved high-buoyancy life jacket and a reinforced river helmet before touching the water. These life vests are designed to keep your head and shoulders well above water automatically without any swimming effort.
Our river guides check and adjust every life vest buckle personally before boarding the rafts. Even if you slip into calm pool sections, the vest floats you instantly.
2. Understanding Class II–III Rapids in Ubud
International whitewater rapids are graded from Class I (flat water) to Class VI (unrunnable/dangerous). The Ayung River in Ubud features continuous Class II to mild Class III rapids.
Class II rapids feature wide, clear channels with medium waves and splashy drops that are exciting but predictable. Class III rapids have fun foaming waves and boulder drops that get everyone laughing and soaked, but do not flip commercial rafts when guided professionally.

Fun, splashy Class II–III rapids through Ayung rainforest gorge.
3. What Your Certified River Guide Actually Does
Every raft carries a certified Balinese river captain seated at the rear with an oversized guide paddle. While guests paddle forward on simple verbal commands (“Forward!”, “Back!”, “Rest!”), your guide steers the raft through optimal river channels and avoids shallow rocks.
Our guides know every rock, boulder eddy, and rapid bend in the river by heart. They navigate smoothly so you can focus on enjoying the scenic rainforest gorge.
4. Highlights: Waterfalls & Ramayana Cliff Murals
The Ayung River is famous not just for rapids, but for its scenery. Along the 12-kilometer stretch, you drift past sheer limestone cliffs wrapped in hanging tropical vines, hidden jungle waterfalls where rafts pause for photos, and 300 meters of intricate Ramayana epic reliefs hand-carved into the river walls.

Celebrating with raised paddles along the lush river gorge.
5. River Finish: Hot Showers & Riverside Buffet
After roughly 2 hours on the river, your raft pulls up to our river finish pavilion. You don’t have to hike back up soaked: clean private hot shower facilities, fresh bath towels, and changing rooms are right there.
After changing into dry clothes, sit down at our cliffside restaurant overlooking the river gorge to enjoy a warm Balinese buffet lunch (chicken satay, nasi goreng, mie goreng, and tropical fruit) before your air-conditioned transfer back to your hotel.
