1. The Golden Rule: Avoid White & Light Pastels
If there is one piece of advice we repeat to every arriving guest, it is this: do not wear your favorite designer t-shirt, white linen resort wear, or light-colored pastel clothes.
The mud in Ubud’s rainforest tracks contains rich volcanic iron minerals. While it is completely natural and harmless to your skin, it acts like a natural dye on light cotton and is notoriously stubborn to wash out.
Choose black, dark grey, navy, or older gym clothes that you don’t mind getting completely muddy. You’ll have 10x more fun if you don’t have to worry about mud stains!
2. The Best Clothes to Wear on Track
Breathable, quick-dry synthetic sportswear is ideal. Quick-dry gym shorts or swim trunks, paired with a lightweight athletic t-shirt or rash guard, provide the best blend of ventilation and comfort under your safety gear.
Long pants vs shorts? In Ubud’s warm tropical climate, comfortable athletic shorts are popular because our rubber boots cover up to your mid-calf. If you prefer UV protection or bug prevention, lightweight leggings or running tights work great.
3. Footwear: Boots vs River Sandals
For the ATV ride, we provide clean, sanitized rubber boots (gumboots) in all sizes from EU 36 to 46. We strongly recommend wearing our boots rather than your own sneakers—they prevent muddy water from soaking into your socks and give you solid traction when stepping off the quad.
Just make sure to bring a pair of comfortable socks to wear inside the boots. If you are doing the Ayung River Rafting combo, bring water shoes, river sandals with ankle straps, or secure sandals for the raft.
4. Essential Daypack Checklist
Here is the exact packing checklist our marshals recommend keeping in your daypack:
- 1 full set of clean dry clothes and underwear for after showering
- A small plastic bag for damp, muddy clothes
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+) and sunglasses with a neck strap
- Waterproof phone pouch with neck lanyard for photos on trail
- Small cash or card for coconut water, fresh juices, or guide tips
5. Packing for the ATV + Rafting Combo
If you booked our popular ATV & Ayung River Rafting Combo, remember that you will do both activities first back-to-back before taking your shower and having lunch.
Wear your athletic clothes or swimwear under protective gear on the ATV, transit to the river for rafting in the same quick-dry clothes, and then take a full hot shower and change into your fresh outfit right before your warm buffet lunch.
